Updated: York City manager Gary Mills has insisted his team will not be “daunted” by an FA Cup fourth qualifying round trip to table-topping Wrexham.

The October 29 tie is, on paper, the hardest draw City could have been handed in the competition but, having already won 3-0 at the Racecourse Ground in the league this season, Mills is unfazed.

Yesterday’s draw saw six of the 32 ties pit Blue Square Bet Premier sides against each other and Mills also added that playing familiar opponents, rather than an unknown quantity, could prove an advantage.

He said: “It’s a tough draw and probably not the one we wanted but we’ll have to go there and win. We know all about Wrexham and what it’s like to go there.

“We’re not going somewhere that will be daunting. We will thrive on playing there. We could have been going to a horrible little ground somewhere to get turned over because that happens in the Cup.”

Mills would prefer the game to be decided without the need for a replay with the Dragons also visiting Bootham Crescent the following Saturday for the league return.

He said: “I’d rather win at Wrexham because it’s never ideal playing the same team two weekends running, let alone three times in a week, which would be the case if we draw. But, either way, we want to go through so bring it on.”

Having progressed to the FA Cup’s third round last season before bowing out gallantly to Premier League Bolton in an unlucky 2-0 defeat, Mills is setting his side the target of reaching the same stage while taking every precaution to ensure any run does not interfere with the primary objective of securing promotion back to the Football League.

He added: “The Wrexham match is a big game for us because it’s an opportunity to bolster the finances. It’s also always great to have a Cup run – make no mistake about that.

“We all know the league is a priority and we will just have to deal with whatever else comes our way. If you do well in the FA Cup and the Trophy, it can get in the way and you can soon find yourselves four or five games behind, which nobody needs.

“But you don’t go into a Cup game not bothered about whether you want to win or not. Getting to the third round again is our aim.”
