YORK City boss Billy McEwan compared Clayton Donaldson to Costa Rican World Cup star Paulo Wanchope after another match-winning goal from his in-form striker.

Donaldson's spectacular solo effort - his sixth goal of the season - saw City clinch a 1-0 victory in a one-sided home match with Kidderminster on Saturday and, afterwards, McEwan likened his unpredictability to that of Wanchope, whom he worked with as a coach at Derby County.

McEwan first encountered Wanchope, who scored two goals against hosts Germany in this summer's World Cup, when he arrived at Derby in 1997 as a trialist from Costa Rican side Club Sport Herdiano, where he is plying his trade again now.

Wanchope went on to become a star at Pride Park before seven-figure moves to West Ham and Manchester City and McEwan has admitted Donaldson, who has recently been watched by several Scottish clubs, reminds him of the 6ft 4in front-man.

The City manager said: "When I first saw Clayton play he reminded me of a poor man's Paulo Wanchope, whom I first saw when Jim Smith asked me to look at him as a trialist during a reserve game at Manchester City and he, obviously, went on to become a really good player and enjoyed a great career. Clayton's gait and movement is very similar and, if he keeps improving, he can achieve things in the game as all our players can.

"Sometimes, he does things and you can see why Hull let him go but he's improving on other areas of his game. He's my type of player because he's flamboyant and can make things happen.

"He can score goals and miss goals and make you laugh and cry but you have got to love him because he's a nice, honest, level-headed kid who you want to do well. There's no edge to him and he's not getting carried away.

"He's not a big-time Charlie and he just wants to enjoy his football and score goals. Like Martyn Woolford, he makes you sit up when he gets the ball and I like that."

McEwan added that he was delighted with the fact that Saturday's result was achieved with only three players in the starting line-up - Donaldson, David McGurk and Neal Bishop - who were on the club's books last season.

He made five changes from the side that lost 3-2 at home to Morecambe on Tuesday night with Lewis McMahon, Danny Parslow and Anthony Lloyd all making their full debuts and Tom Evans and stand-in skipper Steve Bowey returning from suspension.

Reserve 'keeper Arran Reid made way for Evans, while captain Manny Panther missed out with a hamstring problem and Mark Convery, James Dudgeon and Nathan Peat were benched.

McEwan added: "We changed the structure of the team and we are still building a football club and a new side so I'm delighted for the new players that we got three points.

"Martyn Woolford has been thrown in earlier than I expected because of suspension and illness but has adapted well. I was also pleased with Lewis McMahon because he has not played many matches and Parslow hardly put a foot wrong until he nearly cost us at the end."
