YORK City's latest summer capture Anthony Lloyd turned down a new contract at League Two outfit Torquay United to sign for the Minstermen.

Utility man Lloyd left Huddersfield Town for Torquay after a successful loan spell last season but he has opted to move closer to his West Yorkshire home for the 2006/2007 season.

Lloyd, 22, will be hoping to play a significant part in City's forthcoming Conference campaign and will figure in tomorrow night's first pre-season friendly at Gainsborough Trinity.

About the sixth addition to his squad this summer, City boss Billy McEwan said: "He has had Football League experience at a good level at an early age.

"He went to Torquay last season and they wanted to sign him but he's from Pontefract and wanted to return to this area.

"He's not the biggest player but he's got some good qualities about him and he's done excellently in pre-season training. His attitude has been superb.

"He can play in a few positions. He can get forward as a wing-back and can play on the right or the left so he is here to compete for a place."

Lloyd follows Darren Craddock, Steve Bowey, Craig Farrell, David McGurk and Ross Greenwood as McEwan's sixth new permanent additions this summer.

Former Scunthorpe United goalkeeper Tommy Evans is also currently on trial at the club.

Lloyd made his debut for Huddersfield at the age of 19 in September 2003 and went on to play in a 2-0 victory for the Terriers at Bootham Crescent four months later.

The 5ft 7in defender ended his first full season as a first-team regular with two goals in 36 outings and a visit to Cardiff's Millennium Stadium, where he helped Huddersfield to a League Two play-off final victory over Mansfield.

Lloyd then made 14 appearances during the following campaign in League One but found his opportunities limited to one LDV Vans Trophy defeat at Boston United last season before he joined Torquay in November, where he played 25 games.

McEwan likened the signing of Lloyd to that of former York schoolboy and Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Greenwood.

Said McEwan: "They are both young players who have impressed me with their attitude as have a number of the trialists we have been looking at but we have decided to move things along with them.

"I spoke to Paul Sturrock about Ross Greenwood and he gave him a very good reference from having him as a player at Sheffield Wednesday. He phoned me about him last season and I went to watch him but he went to Stockport with Chris Turner.

"He's also got a bit of a pedigree in the League and he got let down at Stockport where he was offered a contract that never materialised."

Former York City youth coach Joe Joyce has been named as Glenn Roeder's successor as the Academy manager of Newcastle United.

Joyce, who spent several months at Bootham Crescent in 1998 as youth coach before joining the Professional Footballers' Association coaching staff, will take over responsibility for the Magpies' youth set-up on September 4 after Roeder took over as first-team boss.
