YORK City have been asked to provide an explanation for their late arrival at Stoke City on Saturday.

Kick-off for the FA Cup third round clash was delayed by half an hour at the Britannia Stadium after the team coach encountered traffic problems on the M62 and M6 due to adverse weather conditions.

The Football Association are now awaiting a statement from the Minstermen, after which they will meet with the FA Cup committee to decide whether the club will face any form of punishment.

An FA spokesman confirmed, however, that national tabloid reports of a £5,000 fine were speculative at this stage. He said: “We’ve asked the club to explain why they were late for the match.

“The FA will then meet up with the FA Cup committee to decide whether any further sanction is required or not.

“There is no real framework for sanctions and there aren’t many precedents of teams being late for FA Cup ties.

“The adverse weather conditions will obviously be taken into account with travel being disrupted throughout the country.

“But what will need to be decided is whether the club made every effort to ensure they made kick off in time.”
