RICHARD Brodie scored his second hat-trick of the season to fire York City through to the second round of the FA Trophy.

The England ‘C international striker took his tally to 23 for the campaign as the Minstermen extended their unbeaten home run to an 18th game following a 3-1 win over Hinckley United and earn a second round trip to Newport County AFC on January 9.

It was, at times, however a far from convincing performance from Martin Foyle’s men with visiting striker Matt West scoring and missing a penalty in the second half.

In truth, though, the Minstermen should have had their first round replay against the Knitters sewn up before the break but only had a Brodie penalty to show from their eight first-half shots on target.

City manager Foyle recalled Brodie, Neil Barrett and Chris Carruthers after resting the trio from Saturday’s first game between the two clubs.

And Barrett took little time to make an impression on his return when, after just 39 seconds, his opportunist 40-yard lob forced a back-pedalling Chris MacKenzie into the first save of the night.

Within the first ten minutes, Brodie also tested MacKenzie from 25 yards and headed weakly towards goal from an Alex Lawless cross.

Brodie, full of running, also saw the ball nicked off his toes after he attempted to round the Hinckley ’keeper before West fired the visitors’ first shot wide from 30 yards on 24 minutes.

A goal-line clearance by Neil Cartwright denied Brodie again after he broke the offside trap to run on to a Michael Rankine pass down the right channel and sidefooted past MacKenzie.

Brodie belatedly broke the deadlock on 36 minutes after he stumbled over MacKenzie’s outstretched arm having cut inside Connor Franklin following Lawless’ through ball.

Referee Russell Fletcher pointed to the spot and Brodie despatched his sixth successful penalty of the season, firing firmly into Mackenzie’s bottom right-hand corner.

Midfielder Levi Mackin went close to grabbing his first goal for City but his thumping 25-yard drive was parried by MacKenzie and Rankine, following up, was flagged offside.

Michael Ingham, who had been a virtual spectator, was then called into action twice in quick succession, tipping over an inswinging Andy Hall free-kick before parrying Sam Smith’s shot on the turn at his near post.

Barrett though was guilty of a glaring miss on 42 minutes when he headed wide from three yards after Lawless had tied Knitters midfielder Dan Dillon in knots before sending in a measured cross from the right.

The busy MacKenzie also pushed a Rankine effort around his left-hand post and kept out close-range attempts from centre-backs David McGurk and Luke Graham from Carruthers’ corner.

But City made a sluggish start to the second period and Hinckley got back on level terms after 48 minutes when West’s excellent 12-yard header looped over Ingham following Franklin’s left-wing cross.

Ingham then reacted quickly to smother a West cross with Smith waiting for a tap-in after Daniel Parslow’s mistake.

Against the run of play, though, Brodie again timed his run to perfection to break clear on goal following Carruthers’ probing pass.

Cutting in from the left channel, he fired across MacKenzie’s goal and into the former Shrewsbury stopper’s bottom left-hand corner.

But the Minstermen survived a huge scare on 73 minutes after Ben Purkiss, on for Parslow, lunged at Jack Roberts who had burst into the home penalty box.

West, however, thumped the resulting spot-kick against the crossbar.

At the other end, Brodie completed his treble haul in the 90th minute, gathering a Purkiss cross from the right before firing off MacKenzie’s right-hand post from six yards.
