VICTORY over Cambridge United in tomorrow’s FA Cup second round clash could further aid York City’s bid for Blue Square Premier promotion, reckons manager Martin Foyle.

Aside from the £27,000 prize money, and gate share from the clash at the Abbey Stadium, there’s also the potential for a money-spinning third round tie with a Premier League club should City win through to the third round.

And, with York third in the league table and the January window looming on the radar, cup cash could prove a timely aid for Foyle’s New Year play-off push.

“Of course it helps,” Foyle said, when asked if victory at Cambridge would open up more transfer options.

“It’s a vicious circle. The more money we can generate, the easier it makes my job. The chairman is very supportive in trying to bring personnel in, but let’s wait and see after the game.”

Foyle continued: “You have one eye on Rushden and on Grays (upciming league games) because we want to try to get into the play-offs. This is a side attraction. I love the FA Cup and the chance to get York City in the hat for the third round would be great.”

The Minstermen manager said right-back Ben Purkiss remains out for the Cambridge trip with a chest problem but centre-back Djoumin Sangare returns to the squad.

Striker Richard Brodie is also back after serving a one-match ban against Gateshead and Foyle reckons the enforced break will have done his 17-goal hit-man some good.

“He needed it. He was very tired (after the England ‘C’ game),” Foyle added.

“You have this long trip to Poland. You get on flight after flight – sleep in different beds – you come back and get on another flight to Newcastle.

“He was absolutely mentally drained. He has had a rest and he will be firing on all cylinders”.

Meanwhile, City’s Bootham Crescent league encounter against Mansfield Town on Boxing Day will not be all-ticket. However, the club have recommended supporters in the main stand, family stand and enclosure book early.
