FORMER York City striker Macaulay Langstaff has been named as the new captain of Notts County.

The 27-year-old takes the armband from ex-City defender Kyle Cameron in what head coach Stuart Maynard has labelled a "constructive change to the leadership structure" at the club ahead of his first full season in charge.

He will be supported by club centurion Matt Palmer, who has been sidelined since November with a serious knee injury, as his vice-captain.

Langstaff, who scored 11 goals in 52 appearances for the Minstermen between 2018 and 2020, had been attracting interest from Hollywood-owned Wrexham, and Sky Bet Championship pair Sunderland and Coventry City after taking home the Sky Bet League Two Golden Boot last season.

He finished his debut EFL campaign with 28 goals and six assists to his name, fending off competition from Wrexham marksman Paul Mullin and Salford City's Matt Smith with a return that included six braces and a first-half hat-trick in a 5-0 thrashing of Morecambe.

Also earning him an inclusion in the League Two Team of the Year, that was the latest in a growing line of achievements for the Stockton-born forward, who holds the record for the most goals across a Vanarama National League season - netting 42 times in 45 appearances as the Magpies were promoted via the play-offs.

Langstaff, who is contracted to County until the end of the 2026-27 season, told the club's media that being handed the captaincy is one of the proudest moments of his career to date.

He explained: “This club means a lot to me, so my initial reaction was one of immense pride.

“To even play for a club of this size, with all its history, is a massive privilege – but to be told by the gaffer that he wants me as captain is one of the proudest moments of my career.

“He’s been brilliant with me and I’m so grateful to him for putting his trust in me to lead the team into next season.

“Going back only a few years, if you’d told me I’d be in this position now I wouldn’t have believed you.

“It feels like every year is getting better and better – going from scoring goals at Gateshead to breaking records at Notts County has been special, but to then be named captain of the world’s oldest professional club is unbelievable.

“But I don’t want to stop here. I want to keep improving, earn more success and keep writing the story with Notts County.”

Maynard added: “For us, Macaulay has everything you need in a captain of a club this size. He has won the respect of everyone – players, staff and supporters – with his incredible, consistent performances and the way he conducts himself day in, day out.
