A FORMER York City loanee has been appointed as a manager in the Vanarama National League North.

John McGrath, who featured for York in 2013, has been unveiled as Buxton's new first-team manager.

The 44-year-old has made the switch from Mickleover after an eight year stint as boss of the Sports, and will be joined by former Bradford City midfielder Ricky Ravenhill and ex-Rotherham United stalwart Pablo Mills as part of his coaching team.

McGrath joined City on an initial one-month loan from Burton Albion in February 2013, making his debut in a goalless draw with Gillingham.

Under the tutelage of Gary Mills, McGrath made five appearances before his loan deal was extended until the end-of-the-season, with Nigel Worthington replacing Mills as first-team manager.

However, Worthington deemed McGrath as surplus to requirements and opted to terminate the loan deal, with the midfielder returning to parent club Burton in their push from promotion via the play-offs.

McGrath had notable spells with Burton, making over 210 appearances, Tamworth and Alfreton Town after initially coming through the academy at Premier League side Aston Villa.

McGrath has high ambitions with Buxton, telling the club media team: "They have a good style of football and a really supportive chairman, the fact that it's a league above where I have come from.

"The opportunity to go full-time, I'm really looking forward to getting my teeth into it.

"Having day-to-day access to the players, a whole week with the squad to challenge in the league that we are in.

"It was a massive attraction for me to go full-time, I'm supported by a chairman and the board who want success.

"I want to progress, I've always been a progressive player and a progressive person and this was the next natural step."
