YORK City ‘Wembley Twice’ defender Jamal Fyfield has been released by Boreham Wood following their relegation to the Vanarama National League South.

Fyfield, 35, was a part of the City squad that won promotion through the then-Conference Premier play-offs and lifted the FA Trophy in a joyous eight-day spell at Wembley Stadium in 2012.

He provided notable contributions on the Minstermen’s way to playing under the famous arch, including assisting Matty Blair’s winning goal in the FA Trophy semi-final second leg at Luton Town.

Joining from Maidenhead United in 2010, the defender went on to score four times in 79 appearances during his stay in North Yorkshire, starting with the final goal of a 3-1 victory at Tamworth on his debut.

Having found game time limited, Fyfield left City by mutual consent in January 2014, then going on to have spells with Grimsby Town, Welling United, Wrexham and Gateshead before signing for Boreham Wood in summer 2018.

He became a fan favourite during his time at Meadow Park, taking the captain’s armband as the club twice reached the Vanarama National League play-off semi finals, sandwiching a first-ever Emirates FA Cup fifth round tie at Everton in 2022.

 

Following the announcement of his departure, Fyfield said on X: “After 250+ games and six AMAZING years at Boreham Wood FC. I’m incredibly proud and grateful to have played for such a club.

“Captaining, reaching the play-off semi’s on two occasions and numerous FA Cup runs will stay long in the memory. I leave behind some great people that I will miss dearly but they are now family.

“The joy I’ve felt winning promotion and the FA Trophy doesn’t compare to the pain I feel after being relegated. But I know the club is in the best hands to bounce back in Danny and Charlie.

“Thank you to the fans who supported and I apologise that we couldn’t give you the ending you deserved. Hopefully you know I gave everything I had each time I pulled on the shirt.

“Wish the club the best and hopefully they come straight back up.”
