SELBY Town were struck for six in their opening match of pre-season, as Scarborough Athletic ran rampant against the Robins.

Braces from Frank Mulhern and a trialist, alongside Kieran Weldji and Lewis Maloney saw Scarborough strike a 6-0 victory over Selby at the Flamingo Land Stadium.

Despite the result, Selby began the game with the opening opportunity as the ever-reliable Kyle Fish saw an effort towards goal smothered by former Harrogate Town shot-stopper Joe Cracknell.

Ben Souter was between the sticks for Selby, and was called into action to tip Scarborough’s trialist’s effort over the bar.

Just over a half an hour in, Scarborough’s growing pressure was rewarded with a cool finish from former Leeds United forward Frank Mulhern, tapping the ball home after a mazy run from winger Harry Green.

Lewis Maloney came close to doubling the scoreline with a well-struck free-kick that narrowly evaded the target.

Green nearly found his way onto the scoresheet after his earlier assist, as Jackson whipped a ball into the winger, who controlled excellently before rattling the woodwork.

Heading into the second half, Jake Charles came close twice in nine minutes, but failed to find his way past Souter.

But soon enough the deficit was doubled, as Weldji capitalised on some more pressure from the Seadogs before calmly finishing into the back of the net.

The scoreline was quickly tripled as Maloney slid the ball into the trialist, who controlled well before slamming past Souter.

Just four minutes later, a fourth was added for Scarborough again courtesy of the trialist, thought to be Charlie Marshall who runs the Sports Evolution academy with York City’s Michael Duckworth.

An outstanding solo effort saw a prolific finish past Souter, solidifying the scoreline.

Mulhern quickly followed in the footsteps of the trialist and added his second of the afternoon, collecting the ball from close-range and sweeping past the goalkeeper to add Scarborough’s fifth, and fourth of the second half.

The match was finished off in the 89 minute, as Maloney deservedly made his way on the scoresheet with a delicate finish that caught Souter off guard.

Next up for Selby is a first home friendly of pre-season, with local side and Northern Counties Eastern League premier division outfit Garforth Town the opposition on Friday, July 7 (7.30pm).
