YORK City will welcome Sky Bet Championship opposition to the LNER Community Stadium during pre-season.

The Minstermen will host Middlesbrough on Saturday, July 15, with a 1pm kick off.

It will be the sixth time that the sides have faced each other in pre-season since 2012, and the third in as many years - with their most recent meeting resulting in a five-goal thriller last July.

Ethan Ross enjoyed a fantastic debut against the Championship outfit following his loan from Sky Bet League Two side Stockport County, producing a string of fine saves to keep the half-time scoreline down.

Sonny Finch opened the scoring for Boro in the fifth minute, but they found the shot-stopper in imperious form, taking until the 65th minute to double their advantage through the boot of Calum Kavanagh.

But City battled their way back into the tie, new signing Manny Duku halving the deficit with a stunning header five minutes later, before Kavanagh completed his brace.

The last word was York's however, Dan Dodds bundling the ball into the back of his own net with a minute of normal time remaining.

York have beaten Middlesbrough as recently as 2021, claiming a 2-1 victory.

Boro will also take on Hartlepool United, led by former City manager John Askey, two days prior on Friday, July 14.

Under Michael Carrick, Middlesbrough enjoyed a successful 2022-23 season, with the former Manchester United midfielder guiding them to a fourth-placed finish.

However, they would lose out on the narrowest of margins to Coventry City, who advanced to the play-off finals with a 1-0 aggregate victory.
