FORMER York City players went through jubilation and heartbreak over the Football League play-off final weekend.

Three former York men were involved in the spectacle of Wembley, with two celebrating promotion up the divisions, including the Premier League.

Carlton Morris of Luton Town enjoyed an end to a joyous season after defeating Coventry City through a penalty shootout, after a 1-1 draw in normal time.

Morris comfortably dispatched his penalty, before the Hatters went on to win the shootout 6-5.

Having played for City in the 2014/15 season, Morris failed to score in eight appearances for the Minstermen.

He’s since gone on to become a prolific goalscorer at Sky Bet Championship season, scoring 20 goals in 47 matches.

Two other former York men were involved in play-off finals, as Akil Wright and Ryan Edmondson faced off in the Sky Bet League Two final.

However, it was second-half substitute Edmondson who went on to secure promotion to Sky Bet League One with Carlisle United, as Wright’s Stockport County lost out on penalties.

Edmondson started his career at City, making just one appearance at senior level before earning himself a move to Leeds United for an undisclosed fee.

The 22-year-old made his debut for the Minstermen at 16-years-old, and now plies his trade with Carlisle.

Wright was more of a regular for York, helping guide City to the Vanarama National League in the 2021/22 season.

The midfielder made 54 appearances for the North Yorkshire side before leaving to join Football League side Stockport after promotion to the National League.

Wright was substituted off in the 69th minute, before Stockport fell to a 5-4 defeat in the shootout.
