Tributes have been paid to York City legend Andy Provan, who has passed away at the age of 79.

Provan passed away after a long battle with Alzheimers disease.

He was an ever-present for York between 1964 and 1968, becoming the club’s second-top scorer in the side that gained promotion to the third division.

The City legend scored 18 goals in that season.

The winger was originally on trial with the club after recovering from a knee injury when at Barnsley, impressing enough to earn a permanent stay in North Yorkshire.

After making 160 league appearances and scoring 49 goals, he left the club to join Chester for £4,000.

Provan’s family have spoken to the club and have admitted that York will always hold a special place in their hearts.

Provan’s daughter Sharon told the club: "It is with a heavy heart that I am informing you of my fathers passing on Friday 12th May 2023.

"Unfortunately my father had a stroke toward the end of February 2020 and did not receive the care and support due to the start of coronavirus. Then over time Alzheimer’s crept slowly in.

"Dad enjoyed his time playing for York City and proved to be the longest time he spent at any one club.

"Dad would often joke about the time he passed the goalkeeper, stopped the ball on the line, went on all fours and headed the ball in. He was not popular with the manager.

"After his time with the club, he went on to play for Chester, Wrexham, Southport, Philadelphia Atoms (USA), Torquay United and Bath City before retiring from professional football after starting his career in Scotland as a boy.

"He was a wonderful father to Mark, John, Sharon and a husband to Anne. He leaves behind eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

"York City will always hold a special place in our hearts."

There will be a funeral next Thursday, 25th May, at 4:15pm at Torquay Crematorium.
