MICHAEL MORTON was ‘chuffed to bits’ after Chesterfield secured a 5-1 thumping over Torquay United on Tuesday night, handing the Minstermen a lifeline in the Vanarama National League relegation battle.

York currently find themselves just three points clear of the dreaded drop zone, with two games remaining including a vital tie with Aldershot Town on Saturday.

But with Torquay collecting five straight wins and adding pressure to City, Morton was pleased that Chesterfield were able to put a stop to Torquay’s impressive winning run.

“I’m chuffed to bits with Chesterfield!” Morton laughed to BBC Radio York.

“But when you look at it you can see that Torquay put a lot in, I think that both teams did but you could see that Torquay have gone late on and it was going to be tough with them with Chesterfield being fresh as well.

“I thought Chesterfield were outstanding and probably could have been three or four up by early doors as well.

“It was a good result for us, but we’ve got to really concentrate on our game for Saturday and Aldershot obviously got a decent result as well at Wealdstone so that puts them just in front of us.

“They’re all big games and the only disappointment for us is that we put the points target together and where we’re going to pick points up, we got ourselves into a really good position and we knew that we only needed to pick up another win or even a draw really.

“We knew the Torquay one was a big one and we wanted to get at least a draw out of that and we would have been safe now.

“So it just puts a little bit more pressure on us.

“This team and how we have been, we’ve had quite a lot of scenarios where we need to go out and win, and I think that’s the same for Saturday.”
