YORK City will approach the Vanarama National League-leaders Wrexham ‘like any other game’ on Saturday, according to interim manager Michael Morton.

Wrexham hold a fantastic home record, having remained unbeaten at the Racecourse Ground this season and dropping just two points.

And with Wrexham currently leading at the top-of-the-table, Morton is aware of the challenge his York side face, but is keen not to get caught up in the heat of the fixture.

“[We approach it] like any other game.” Morton admitted.

“We haven’t changed anything, we haven’t built the game up and we’ve just prepared how we would normally prepare.

“We’ve got two games in a short period of time but for us we’ve got to go and do what we can do.

“Everybody knows that with this team we can go and put in good performances against those who are up and around there, and I expect the same on Saturday.

“The first one is a cup final on Saturday so if we can get something from Saturday or even put in a really good performance then that will build confidence and really help us out going into Tuesday.

“But for us, let’s prepare for Saturday first and then we’ll start to look at Tuesday after that.

“Records are there to be broken, and that’s what we’ve spoke about.

“We’ve just got to stay focused and focus on what we need to do. The lads will enjoy it. The main thing for us is just making sure we put a good performance in, that’s the key thing.

“And I think since I’ve stepped in as interim manager, there has probably been half a game where I’ve been really disappointed with it, the rest of it I think we’ve done what we’ve put together in terms of the game plan and that’s got to be the same for this weekend.

“It’s going to be a good crowd but you’ve got to enjoy playing in these moments.

“We just keep doing what we’ve been doing. We keep practicing, we keep doing the stuff we’ve been doing on the training ground.

“If you look at the stats from when we came in and took over, they have actually been a lot better than they were before.

“But still, you can see there’s a lot of weakness. We’ve got to keep working on it and keep defending the box as well as we can, and we might have to look at a few little selections within the team that might help us with that, but that’s something we’ve got to go through today and see what it looks like tomorrow in training.

Morton’s first game in charge of York was actually back in December, in a 2-0 victory over Woking, as he filled in for former manager David Webb who had fallen ill.

Webb and Morton were both present at City’s 1-1 draw with Wrexham in early December before taking on the reigns, and Morton was impressed with the Minstermen.

“It was a great game, first of all there was the crowd and that was near enough a sell out.

“I think it was probably what we expected, they came out on the front foot and were really sharp over the first 20 minutes.

“I think after York settled a little bit they got a bit of control and it could have gone either way.

“It was a real disappointment with the overhead kick that’s gone in, it was just really disappointing that York had put all that in and then you’re thinking ‘here we go’.

“It was an electric atmosphere after that. I thought they deserved a point on the day, and I think we can go and do the same again this weekend.”
