YORK City interim manager Michael Morton has confirmed that Maziar Kouhyar is back available for selection in tonight's match with Altrincham.

Kouhyar has struggled with injuries for the majority of the Vanarama National League season, after being sidelined with a lengthy abductor injury and coping with a tooth infection.

But despite originally being ruled out for the Altrincham match, Morton has confirmed that Kouhyar is available for selection, and has put his case forward for a start.

“Maz is actually feeling a lot better, although we are still waiting to see when he is going to have an operation but he trained well today, so he could be back in.

“It’s like an infection, so he has to have a wisdom tooth taken out.

“I think it’s just mapping out when it is going to be done, I was told it was going to be done this week, but I spoke to him today and he wants to play so if he is feeling alright then he is in contention to be in.”

“[Ethan Ross] just had a light session, he’s got another assessment on Thursday.

“Hopefully he can have a full contact session on Friday, we’ll have to sit down with Joe [Stead] and Ethan and just see sort of where he is moving on from there.

“With Sam [Sanders] we are just taking it steady.

“We don’t want him [Sam Sanders] to breakdown, we know he is a high prospect for the club moving forward and obviously he has got another year here.

“I think for us it is just making sure he is fully fit and then we’ll see what that looks like for him moving forward.”

Morton also reinstated midfielder Gus Mafuta into the first team squad, making a first start since early December.

Mafuta has struggled with a long-term calf injury, making just 14 Vanarama National League appearances for the Minstermen since joining the club last Summer from fellow National League outfit Boreham Wood.

The midfielder is someone Morton recognises needs regular game time to regain fitness, with the interim boss discussing the possibility of allowing unfit players to leave the club on a short-term basis.

“It was good to see Gus [Mafuta] get some minutes, I thought he had a decent first half to say that he has been out for so long, he struggled in the second half with his fatigue but that was expected.

“The first thing is getting them fit on the training pitch with us and then seeing where they are at, and if they aren’t playing can we get them on loan.

“We’ve spoke to all of them individually.

“So ultimately we want what is best for the club to start with, so that has players moving out on short-term loans and then coming back fully fit, that is an option.

“I think for us it is just about getting them fit on the pitch first because if they are going to offer us something then that will benefit the first team.”
