YORK City interim manager Michael Morton was disappointed with the result to Dagenham & Redbridge, but admitted he can't fault the players for their 'performance and effort again'.

Morton's side were bested thanks to two goals caused by defensive errors, as Inih Effiong and Dean Rance inflicted striking blows to diminish Shaq Forde's early opener.

Despite the result, City dominated possession and had the majority of chances, but were still unable to pick up any points.

Nevertheless, Morton was pleased with the work rate of his side, despite defeat.

“I’ve just said to the lads in there that I can't fault you for your performance and your effort again, like the fans they were superb." Admitted Morton.

"I think we've played against two teams who are in and around the playoffs and have limited them to four shots on target over the two games, but conceded three goals.

“But we just can't keep making these mistakes because I thought we were in total control.

"I didn't feel like there was any point apart from late on when we started to go after the game. I thought we played some good stuff. I felt we created a lot of chances and got in good areas again.

"Again, we were not ruthless enough in the final third, and then we just switched off before half-time because as soon as we come out again in the second-half we got a foothold of the game again and we looked like we were on the front foot.

"And then we just don't track the midfielder and he just gets a free header. So we have just got to learn from it.

"I need to have a look at it again, but I think we've overcommitted on one side. He’s got the flick on and he's just found him.

"It's that schoolboy defending again. We've just got this habit of switching off just before half-time and conceding goals like that.

"We need to learn otherwise we're going to be in trouble.

"We've been tracking midfielders all day really well. I need to have a look back and see who he has run off, but he’s been playing holding midfield most of the game so he’s just set off, gambled, but we've not tracked him thinking that we will be alright and he's just got freedom.

"That isn’t good enough.

"We knew that these three games were going to be tough, but performance-wise, we're disappointed because we should have come away with more points over the two games.

"We've got to brush ourselves down and we've got to go again against Bromley.

"It’s going to be another tough task travelling back down here again with no training prep. That's another thing we're trying to do, but again, we can’t fault the lads in terms of the effort we're doing, but we have to learn and we're gonna have to pick some points over the next two games.

"They are gutted, absolutely gutted.

"It's just pulling everyone together and trying to go after the positives, but really highlight where the areas that we need to be better.

"Any game that I've seen so far this year, whenever we have made the mistakes we have still gone on and got points or won the game.

"So we will assess that on Monday morning for when we travel back down here and hopefully get it right for Tuesday."

Nevertheless, Morton was pleased with the quality of City's opener.

“You could see we pushed Ryan [Fallowfield] a little bit up earlier, just trying to get onto their full back, and it was like three really key passes.

"It was Mitch [Hancox] straight into Ryan, who was in front, and then Ryan’s ball across to Shaq, it was a great goal. And listen, we deserved it.

"If anything, we should have scored another one or two, at least in the first half."
