YORK City fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Eastleigh on Tuesday, thanks to a scintillating free-kick from substitute Michael Kelly.

Here are five things we learnt from the Vanarama National League clash.

1. Applause to the supporters

There has never been any doubt that York supporters are some of the most dedicated in the league, and Tuesday night proved that.

A fantastic 177 fans made the 500-mile round trip to the Silverlake Stadium in midweek, despite having back-to-back away fixtures to London in the next seven days.

But the supporters never once shied down from the home following, and made their presence known. The players gratefully clapped their fans on the full-time whistle, and deservedly so, after an incredible showing from the Minstermen faithful.

2. Squad depth

Mikey Morton has made it known recently that he will need everybody in the squad to contribute in the next few weeks due to the hectic fixture.

And despite defeating Yeovil Town 2-1 on Saturday, Morton opted to make five changes from that side, with injuries being a concerning factor.

But it's a positive to see players as talented as Maziar Kouhyar, Shaq Forde and Mitch Hancox able to come into a side.

And whilst it wasn't the result City wanted, it's always a positive to see that there is good depth within the York ranks.

3. Not taking the chances

Despite clinching the three points, Eastleigh mustered just two shots throughout the 90 minutes on Tuesday.

City certainly had the better of the chances, with Olly Dyson, Ollie Tanner and Forde all frustrated to have not gotten their names on the scoresheet.

It's difficult to create the chances, especially against a play-off occupant like Eastleigh, so it is pivotal that York make the most of these opportunities, with only Dyson really testing Joe McDonnell on the night after a fantastic foot save by the shot-stopper.

4. A bit of discipline

There are no complaints about York players getting stuck in and potentially giving a foul away, but the Minstermen had picked up three yellow cards in the opening 50 minutes of the match.

It makes it more difficult to provide those crucial challenges if the players are all on last chances before being sent off, and perhaps it's something that needs to be reviewed by the coaching staff at the club.

But with York also being fined for their actions in the recent 3-1 defeat to Wealdstone, perhaps something needs to be done to prevent these issues from arising again.

5. Looking forward

Whilst it wasn't the greatest of spectacles, City certainly matched Eastleigh on the night.

Looking ahead to matches against Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday and Bromley on Tuesday night, a lot can be taken from the Eastleigh and Yeovil matches into these contests.

Forde is looking like a threat on the wing and it's great to see Kouhyar back too, so perhaps moving away from the five at the back operation could reap rewards for City, even if it didn't on Tuesday.

But it's interesting to see Morton experimenting with formations and changes, and it looks as if he is planning for a longer-term operation to find a consistent winning formula for the Minstermen.
