YORK RUFC enjoyed a dominant 36-14 victory over a lowly Scunthorpe side.

In what was a scrappy contest to start off with, it would be Scunthorpe who suddenly produced a lovely backs movement which saw their fullback Lugsden overlapping and touching down near the corner for a try converted by Taylor. (0-7).

The continuous pressure on the visitors’ defence was telling and following a Scholey sidestep and forward drive, Atkins was put through for a fine score which Davies converted. (7-7).

From the restart, Scunthorpe enjoyed a short period within the York 22, finding touch in the corner and a good rolling maul secured a try by Linklater, again converted by Taylor (7-14 after 33 mins).

However a kick and chase saw York’s Fordy outpace the defence to retain control of the ball on the halfway then Croft burst forward with ball in hand before feeding Elliot who executed his signature “chip ahead and gather”, before crossing for a great try under the posts, converted by Davies. Halftime (14-14)

York stole a lineout not long later and a lovely break allowed a Jonty Atkinson try midway from corner to posts. Davies’ conversion attempt failed. (19-14).

York found a good touch in the corner and this time Atkin was through and scored a fine try. The conversion was successful. (26-14 )

Their fate was sealed when Ford escaped the clutches of three defenders, broke forward at pace and fed Elliot who scampered over for his second of the afternoon. The conversion from out wide failed. (31-14)

Scunthorpe had struggled to threaten York since the 33rd minute, and a scrum penalty award to York summed up the efforts nicely.

Scunthorpe tried until the end but in doing so presented Elliott with a final interception which saw him scamper home for his hat trick. Not converted (36-14).
