YORK City interim manager Michael Morton has expressed his disappointment at the 3-1 defeat to Wealdstone, after a dismal trip to the capital.

An underwhelming performance saw York fall to a mediocre defeat at the hands of Wealdstone on Saturday, after goals from Corie Andrews, Tarelle Whittaker and Tarryn Allarakhia meant that Adam Crookes’ late goal was merely a consolation.

City interim boss was understandably not happy at the manner of the result, with five consecutive defeats now in the Vanarama National League and with the club lingering just three points ahead of the relegation zone.

“It’s obviously disappointing when you lose a game and then have a long trip back.” Admitted Morton.

“We got stuck in a traffic jam as well so I don’t think I got to bed until about half past one.

“It wasn’t great and we obviously want to win those games and we want to enjoy our journeys back but unfortunately we didn’t.

“I think what we were most disappointed with is that we actually did well with the game plan.

“When you look at the stats back we created more chances than them, we got the ball into the box and into critical areas more than them, had more attacking chances but ultimately we made two mistakes and got punished for them.

“When you make mistakes like that you get punished.

“I think the players were disappointed obviously with the result, but they worked really hard in terms of their physical output.

“It’s just a shame and we’ve got to make sure we cut those sort of mistakes out.”

York host Boreham Wood at the LNER Community Stadium (7.45pm) tonight, with the Minstermen desperate to pick up some crucial points with just 15 games remaining of the current season.

It’s become a trend where former players often score against City, something which was duplicated the last time these two sides faced off.

In a 1-1 draw last November, it was a second-half strike from ex-Yorm man Jamal Fyfield that ruled out Lenell John-Lewis’ earlier opener.

It was also an occasion that happened just two weeks ago, as a late strike from another former City man Mark Beck gifted Solihull Moors the three points.

Morton is aware of this unfortunate trend, and finds it amusing in footballing culture.

“It wasn’t too long ago since Beck scored against us, and for some reason these sort of things always pop up don’t they?

“We’ve just got to make sure we limit their chances and impose our game on them and hopefully we can get some more goals.”
