YORK City interim manager Michael Morton has bolstered his coaching staff ahead of tomorrow night's Vanarama National League clash with Boreham Wood with the addition of Tony McMahon.

McMahon, who has made over 350 appearances as a player, has joined the club in the short term to aid Morton on the touchline.

The former Sheffield United and Bradford City defender has had coaching spells in both Middlesbrough and Darlington’s academies, before taking up a coaching position with Scunthorpe United in 2021.

“He’s going to be part of the coaching staff. I’ve said it before but we need experienced people around,” explained Morton.

“We haven’t got many bodies on the training pitch. Obviously we’ve got Scotty [Scott Barrow] and Paddy [McLaughlin] who are helping out, but we need some more bodies there still.

“Scotty is still looking at his recovery so he’s got to balance that, Paddy is still a player.

“So we just need to get some bodies in who have been around as players, ex-players and as coaching staff.

“Tony is a great addition for us and we’re still looking to get someone else in just to help us until we get everything sorted.”

Morton remains in the interim managerial hotseat after the sacking of David Webb almost two weeks ago, and remains in conversation with the club with regards to his future and whether he will continue his reign in charge.

“I met with Glen [Henderson] yesterday and I spoke to Alistair [Smith] and we’re just trying to work out what we can do.

“We’ve got another meeting after but at the moment it’s just trying to get the best out of what we’ve got.

“We’ve got to make decisions quickly so we can get organised, whatever that looks like, we need to get organised for the club.

“If I’m honest I said to them last week to just let us concentrate on the last couple of games, but obviously we’ve got a week in so we need to make sure that communication happens more.

“I spoke to them both yesterday, I’m speaking to them both today and it’s just so we can have some clarity in terms of the changing room and what that looks like.”
