YORK City interim manager Michael Morton has expressed how ‘proud’ he feels to be in temporary charge of his hometown club.

Morton was placed in charge last Wednesday after the sacking of David Webb, and secured an Isuzu FA Trophy fifth round victory over Southend United, thanks to goals from Fraser Kerr and Lenell John-Lewis.

But having grown up as a York fan and previously having a stint as manager at local club Tadcaster Albion, Morton is proud to be helping the club in its current unprecedented position.

“We came on and I got mixed emotions, it’s one of them where I’ve got the opportunity to lead my own city which I am really proud of.” Morton admitted.

“But on the other side I want what is best for the club.

“I think the main for me with staying around is making sure that I support the players in listening to their plans.

“We had a real clear plan on what was going to happen when Webbo [David Webb, former York manager] left, so I think it was really important for me to just stay around and try and settle the ship with the players.

“We had a team meeting last Thursday. And then on Friday it was just about trying to strip things back and become really hard to beat.

“I think for us we’ve just got to go out in each game and try and pick up as many points as we can, we’re just trying to keep it as simple as possible. We’re working hard and making sure we’re hard to beat.

“I’ve spent a lot of time watching York when I’ve not been managing or coaching on a Saturday.

“I think there’s a picture going around on social media of when I was nine years old and going to Wembley so that shows I’ve always supported York and always wanted the best for them.

“Listen, whatever happens in the future I am proud of doing what I am doing now, but ultimately I want what is the best for the club.

Morton will remain in charge for the match against Wealdstone this coming Saturday at Grosvenor Vale (3pm).

“It’s massively important, we’ve got three games in seven days and we’ve set our target behind the scenes in what we want from those three games.

“Ultimately it’s just about getting points on the board and sometimes it’s not going to look pretty but ultimately as long as we get points on the board that is the main thing for the club.”
