YORK City supporters have voted to a 79 per cent majority in favour of the return of manager John Askey, after the Press ran an online poll last week.

The Minstermen are in search of a third manager of the season, after David Webb was sacked by the club following a major slump in form that saw York slip to 18th in the Vanarama National League table and just four points clear of the drop zone.

An interim management team consisting of Michael Morton, Scott Barrow, Paddy McLaughlin and goalkeeping coach Joe Stead have been placed in temporary charge.

Askey was sacked last November by City in sour conditions, and many are concerned about whether he’d be willing to come back to the club.

But after leading the club to promotion from the Vanarama National League North last season, Askey continues to be backed for the job and is currently the outright betting favourite for the job.

And a poll confirmed that City supporters are heavily in favour of the appointment of Askey, with 79 per cent of 537 voters supporting the return of the ex-manager, whilst just 21 per cent believe it is time for a fresh start in the dugout at the LNER Community Stadium.

Askey currently stands as the 1/3 favourite for the job, whilst interim boss Morton is now 5/1 to take permanent charge of the club.

There are four different contenders all stood at 12/1 odds behind Askey and Morton to become the new City manager, with Ian Burchnall, David Artell, Russ Penn and Jonathan Greening all also being backed.

Greening was a name previously linked in December when Webb was hired, after doing a brilliant job with Scarborough Athletic.
