YORK CITY manager David Webb has addressed the 2-1 defeat to Maidenhead United on Saturday afternoon, claiming the club ‘either have to fight or lay down’.

Webb’s side displayed an underwhelming performance against a Maidenhead side who had won just two in their previous 11 matches.

Goals from Ashley Nathaniel-George and Charlee Adams made Lenell John-Lewis’ late strike merely a consolation.

But with another frustrating result for York supporters, it’s now just two league victories since mid-October for City, who currently sit just five points adrift of the dreaded relegation zone.

“There’s no excuse for today.” Webb admitted.

“We’ve got two choices here, we either have to fight or we lay down.

“And if we keep playing like that, we’re going to lose points. We’ve been in the dressing room for the last half an hour, there’s been a lot of choice words said and a lot of words we needed said from everyone.

“Hopefully now we get a response from them because I don’t think we have been in that situation where it has got that angry. Now it needs it, it needs a reaction. It needs something to change.

“When they’re in a situation where they are winning a game they are going to make it ugly for us, they’re going to waste time and they’re going to get fouls and they’re going to blast it into the corner.

“They’re going to try and win it as much as they can and possibly try and waste time.

“I think when that happens it gets us more frustrated, but there’s no excuses today for playing not good enough.

Webb has overseen eight matches since replacing John Askey in mid-December, and has defended himself after recent criticism of tactical decision from fans.

“I think before we came in the team hadn’t won in eight or nine.

“We’ve won four, two of those in the league and two of those in the cup and now we’ve lost three and drawn one.

“By our standards and as a team and as a club from management it is just not good enough. It might have improved a little bit from the predecessor, but it’s still nowhere near where we should be.

“The players always get a chance to have their say.

“They’re angry at each other, they’re frustrated at each other, we’re all frustrated and there’s a lot of words said but we have to go again on Monday and it’s how we try to fix the way we approach the mentality for the week.

"If we want to get points on the board and start elevating up then we need to change very fast.

“I think we need this time now to really get in to what we need to do and what we need to go up.

"We need to make sure our attacking game is getting points now, there’s no excuses for that.

"All we can do is go again and fight again.”
