YORK CITY manager David Webb has assured that there are ‘no excuses’ after today’s 2-1 defeat to a lowly Maidenhead United side.

Webb’s side showed a gutless performance against a Maidenhead side who are winless in the league in their last seven outings, after goals from Ashley Nathaniel-George and Charlee Adams secured the three points before Lenell John-Lewis’ late consolation.

But with just two league victories since mid-October, supporters are beginning to understandably show discontent, with the dreaded relegation zone now just five points away from the Minstermen.

“No excuses.” Webb reprimanded.

“I can’t offer anything up today, I’m not going to talk about too much we just weren’t good enough.

“We started really slow, we never really got going until probably halfway through the second half. The tempo wasn’t there and we just started really, really slow.

“We gave away a soft goal, we let someone run from our halfway line all the way in, probably 30, 40 yards.

It just wasn’t good enough, it wasn’t nasty enough, didn’t fight enough, didn’t compete enough and we got beat.

“We put pressure on them in the last sort of ten, fifteen minutes but we didn’t wake up until then to be fair. It took to go two goals down for us to wake up, and that’s just not good enough.

“We felt it was our best team to go and win the game. It was an attacking team, we felt our best players were on the pitch to affect the game. But it wasn’t to be, and we lost it.

Young goalkeeper Ryan Whitley made his first league start of the season after a brief loan stint with Vanarama National League North side Boston United that was cut short after Ethan Ross sustained a suspected concussion in the 2-0 defeat to Oldham Athletic in midweek.

Whitley found himself embroiled in controversy however, after collecting a back pass that the referee deemed had not come off of the knee of Fraser Kerr.

“That’s not our fault the second goal.” Webb demanded.

“We weren’t good enough to win the game, that’s a fact and I’m not going to start making excuses. But that’s come off-of his knee to go back to the goalkeeper and that’s just poor.”
