LOCAL referee Matt Sowerby has been promoted in the mid-season to officiate in the English Football League.
Sowerby, who has refereed Knaresborough Town in the Northern Counties Eastern League premier division, has been officiating at Vanarama National League level this season, even refereeing York City’s pre-season friendly 1-0 defeat to Notts County in July 2022.
The Harrogate-based referee also acts as the Northumberland FA Referee Development Officer, overseeing the progress and helping referees to improve their skills and perform at a higher level.
Sowerby can perform as a referee or as an assistant, often working alongside other referees to provide support as a linesman or fourth official.
After being appointed as the Northumberland FA Referee Development Officer in January 2021, Sowerby has often been vocal in offering his support for referees and campaigning against abusive language used against match officials, recently supporting Northumberland FA Mental Health Champion David McCall in fighting against abuse.
Knaresborough were quick to congratulate Sowerby on his promotion, which will begin from February 1st, saying on Twitter: “Knaresborough Town Football Club would like to congratulate local official Matt Sowerby on his promotion to the EFL!
“It has been fantastic to see him develop over his career inc officiating games at Manse Lane. Congratulations Matt!”
