OLDHAM ATHLETIC assistant manager John Ebbrell has hailed his side’s performance against York City, claiming the Latics ‘deserved’ the three points.

Goals from Josef Yarney and Timmy Abraham sentenced York to a gutless defeat in Lancashire on Tuesday night, in a performance which has left supporters understandably disappointed.

But Oldham assistant manager Ebbrell showed no sorrow, and is delighted with the result heaping praise on his side.

“It was a good performance, the lads played well from start to finish.” Ebbrell told the Oldham media team.

“Two good goals. We deserved to win but what we want is to be more consistent but we need to keep that going.

“In terms of performance, it was our best from start to finish at home for a while.

“It was a really important, I think that the messages that we were giving the players are starting to feel like they are consistently coming out in games.

“So that tonight looked right, it felt right against a good team, but we dominated large periods of the game.

Yarney gave the Latics the lead in the 41st minute, pouncing on a spill from Ethan Ross despite many claiming that the goalkeeper had sustained a head injury.

“It was important. But I felt we were creating a load of real clear chances, it was pressure football.

"A free-kick, a good header from Mike [Fondop] and the front two I thought worked tirelessly for us which was good. And then the centre-back following it in, it doesn’t matter where the goal has come from, it’s great.

“And then in the second half I thought we dominated large periods but it was pleasing to get that goal in terms of gambling and getting in behind, and it was a good finish.

“Looking at them before the game they have some good attacking players. They’ve got a lad whose scored four goals in two games so they have got that threat. I thought that we dealt with it really well, having said that we’re always looking to improve.”

Oldham goalkeeper Magnus Norman was a thorn in York’s side, with some brilliant stops to deny any sign of a comeback and to maintain a deserved clean shett.

“They’ve hit the woodwork twice, we’ve had to rely on Magnus to make saves for us.” Admitted Ebbrell

“Whenever you look back on a game, there’s always the key turning points. So it was a really important save, touched the free-kick onto the [woodwork] and it was a really important save.”
