GATESHEAD boss Mike Williamson hailed his side's ability to "really minimise the offensive threat" of York City in Monday's 3-0 win at the LNER Community Stadium.

Gateshead moved to within a point of safety from relegation in the Vanarama National League after a convincing victory at York.

Two Danny Elliott penalties and an Owen Bailey strike saw Heed take all three points and condemn City to a defeat as manager David Webb strode the touchline for the first time as Minstermen boss.

“It was a proper performance," enthused Gateshead player-manager Williamson.

"It felt like the identity and blueprint we set ourselves in pre-season.

“Since we’ve come in (in 2019), we’ve had that high intensity and structure. The lads deserve all the credit because that was raw emotion and heart, wanting to win the battles.

“Off the back of that you can play your good football, which we did. The result was thoroughly deserved.

“What was pleasing was that our belief in ourselves never waned regardless of they were having periods when they (York) were on top and getting in our box.

“They’ve got some very good players, they’re a massive club, but we’ve come and really minimised their offensive threat and fought all the way.”

York, who remain 16th, will be hoping to avoid the league double to the 21st-placed Gateshead when the two sides meet again in the North East on Sunday (3pm).

“Our main objective is regardless of our position, our last game, our last result, our last performance, whether we go a goal up or a goal down, it’s to go again," added Williamson.

“The boys deserve all the credit because they had to empty the tank consistently all game and they really gave the fans something to cheer about which is pleasing.”
