FORMER York City captain Sean Newton led Buxton to a 2-1 victory over Matlock Town in his first match in charge as joint player-manager.
Vice-captain Newton has stepped up to lead Buxton alongside skipper Josh Granite following the resignation of manager Jamie Vermiglio on Saturday evening.
Vermiglio walked away after a fifth straight defeat at the weekend, losing 3-2 to Bradford (Park Avenue).
In his stead, under Newton and Granite, Buxton beat Matlock in the Derbyshire Senior Cup, with Diego de Girolamo scoring twice.
The home side featured ex-Minstermen Scott Boden, Harry Bunn and Jack McKay.
Newton made 188 appearances for York between 2016 and 2022, winning three Clubman of the Year awards. He joined Buxton in February.
