KINGSLEY JAMES has stepped down from his role as York City first-team coach following the shock sacking of manager John Askey.

York sacked Askey on Tuesday despite a hugely successful year at the helm, during which time he delivered promotion from the Vanarama National League North, a semi-final spot in the Isuzu FA Trophy and clear safety from relegation thus far in the National League.

Following Askey's sacking, James has also chosen to walk away from the club.

James joined York's backroom staff in November, days after Askey's appointment as interim manager, and has been instrumental in the club's recent success.

In a statement, York City said: "We thank Kingsley for his work with the club over the last year."

The departure of the former England 'C' international means that York will be led by interim manager Tim Ryan for tomorrow's Vanarama National League clash with Wealdstone (3pm) at the LNER Community Stadium.

Ryan will be assisted by injured defender Scott Barrow and goalkeeping coach Mark Goodlad.

Youth team manager Ryan is not expected to take the job on a permanent basis.

“I’m confident enough that I can do the job for the time being," said Ryan.

"I’m not saying that I want the job by any stretch of the imagination. I’m helping the football club.

“I’m happy with what I do and enjoy my job here and it’s a big job we’ve got to develop youth football in York.

“But my main interest at this moment in time is the first-team and getting three points, starting on Saturday.”
