JOHN ASKEY has insisted that “there’s a lot of questions” after York City’s performance away at Altrincham.

Despite taking an early lead through a Maxim Kouogun header, York were beaten 2-1 by Altrincham on Saturday night.

Goals from Elliot Newby and Ryan Colclough were enough for Alty to pick up the win, their first victory at home since a 1-0 over Oldham Athletic last month, which was also the last game in which they scored prior to facing City.

The loss extended the Minstermen’s winless run in all competitions to six, though they had chances to win the match throughout.

One such example was when captain Lenell John-Lewis missed a chance from just yards out in the first half.

“When you’ve got chances like that, and the one in the second half that was pulled back by Michael Duckworth, you’ve got to hit the target,” reflected Askey.

“Too many times we missed the target. I think Olly Dyson had one where, if he gets it on target, then he might pick the rebound up if it doesn’t go in.

“There’s a lot of questions after today’s performance.

“I thought we started well and we were controlling the game. Then, for whatever reason, we stopped doing that.

“In certain periods of the game, we didn’t show enough aggression when we didn’t have the ball. The second half, I just thought we stopped playing.”

Despite being down by a goal in the final 10 minutes, Askey brought defender Fraser Kerr on as one of his substitutes.

When asked if that was done so he could change the shape, Askey said: “Exactly that. The two wide men weren’t producing anything.

"We got more crosses in when they went off than what we did before and we needed to get two up front.

"Whatever you do when you don’t win, it’s always wrong. You can only do your best.

“There’s times where I’ve changed the team and it’s worked for us, but today, it wasn’t to be.”
