JOHN ASKEY admits that York City would have preferred “plenty of other draws” than away to Shrewsbury Town in the Emirates FA Cup.

A late Mitch Hancox winner earned York a 2-1 win over Bury AFC in the fourth qualifying round of the Cup on Saturday before being drawn against Shrewsbury in the first round on Monday night.

The tie, which will take place at Montgomery Waters Meadow on Saturday, November 5 (3pm), will prove a huge test for Vanarama National League side City as they travel to a Shrewsbury outfit currently eighth in Sky Bet League One, outside the play-offs on only goal difference.

“Shrewsbury are doing well this season and going away there is going to be really tough,” said York manager Askey.

“But it’s one for the players to look forward to, to test themselves against League One players.

“It’s something to look forward to, but we’re putting it on the backburner.”

Askey managed Shrewsbury for 21 matches in 2018, winning just five times before being dismissed.

Asked whether he was looking forward to returning to his old club, Askey replied: “Not really. There’s plenty of other draws that I would have preferred.

“It’s going to be tough going there but it’s a good opportunity for the players.”
