FORMER York City Knights player-coach Chris Thorman will depart Workington Town at the end of the season.

Thorman has been in charge at Workington since 2019, following his departure from Betfred Super League side Huddersfield Giants the previous year.

He led Town to promotion through the Betfred League One play-offs last year although the Cumbrian club have since suffered immediate relegation from the Betfred Championship, having won just one of their 26 league matches ahead of Sunday’s final-day trip to York (3pm).

A brief statement from Workington read: “Head coach Chris Thorman has taken the decision to accept an opportunity at another club and will leave us at the end of the season.

“We’d like to put on record our sincere thanks to Chris for his time at Town and wish him all the very best for the future.

“Further details to follow as Chris and the club’s focus is on our final game of the season away at York.”

Thorman heads to the LNER Community Stadium on Sunday after a playing career at York compromising of 61 appearances between 2010 and 2012, during which he scored 14 tries, 100 goals and four drop-goals.

The former England captain was a key part of the Knights side which won promotion from Championship One in 2010 and would consolidate their safety in the second tier over the next two seasons, the latter being served as player-coach, before leaving North Yorkshire for Huddersfield.

The club that Thorman is set to join from 2023 is yet to be revealed.

Meanwhile, Chris Thorman's brother, Neil Thorman has announced his retirement from rugby league after a 20-year playing career, which included a five-match spell in York's 2005 promotion season from National League Two.
