YORK City have not received any approach for manager John Askey after the boss emerged as the bookmakers’ clear odds-on favourite to take the vacant Rochdale job.

Rochdale parted company with boss Robbie Stockdale last week after the Sky Bet League Two club lost all of their first four league matches.

Long-serving player-coach Jim McNulty has since been placed in interim charge and oversaw Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Swindon Town, leaving the Dale as the only point-less club in the fourth tier.

Rochdale are seeking to appoint a new manager as quickly as possibly and York boss Askey is the current favourite to step into the hot-seat, according to BetVictor.

Askey is the 1/2 betting favourite at the time of writing, having led City to promotion through the Vanarama National League North play-offs last season following his November arrival at the club.

The Minstermen have however confirmed that no official approach has come from Rochdale.

The news follows speculation linking Askey to National League counterparts Notts County in May after Ian Burchnall's move to Forest Green Rovers.

The 57-year-old was briefly priced as short as evens to make the move before ex-Swansea City assistant manager Luke Williams was named as the club's head coach a month later.

Keith Hill of fellow fifth-tier outfit Scunthorpe United is second-favourite for the Rochdale gig at 2/1.

Hill has had three previous spells at Rochdale, one as a player and two as manager, twice winning promotion through League Two when in post as the latter.

Ex-Crewe Alexandra manager David Artell (4/1), former Fleetwood Town boss Graham Alexander (12/1) and Chris Beech (16/1), previously of Carlisle United, are also in the mix, say BetVictor.
