YORK City have continued their recruitment drive with the signings of five players.

Left-back Alex Whittle, centre-back Fraser Kerr, central midfielder Gus Mafuta, defensive midfielder AJ Greaves and goalkeeper Ethan Ross have all joined York, with the latter joining on a season-long loan.

Whittle and Kerr arrive at City from Chesterfield, who reached the Vanarama National League play-off semi-finals last season.

The former returns after being part of the York side relegated to the National League North in 2017 while the latter counts Birmingham City, Motherwell, Gateshead, Hartlepool United and Torquay United among his former clubs.

Mafuta heads to the Minstermen on the back of a couple of seasons with National League play-offs chasers Boreham Wood.

The ex-Gateshead and Hartlepool man won promotion to Sky Bet League Two with Salford City in 2018/19.

Greaves returns to the LNER Community Stadium after making five appearances on loan at John Askey’s side last term, before an injury ruled him out for the rest of the season.

His switch to York brings to an end a three-year professional spell with Doncaster Rovers, where he progressed from the club’s academy.

Ross is loaned in from newly-promoted League Two side Stockport County, having had past non-league experience with Maidstone United, Weymouth and Aldershot Town.

The arrival of the quintet, alongside the news of the academy players Jonny Haase, Ben Dale, Elliot Owen, Kyle Lancaster and Jonny Shepherd signing professional deals, brings City’s squad up to 23.

New recruits Scott Boden, Alex Hurst, Ryan Fallowfield, Adam Crookes and Scott Burgess had already been brought in.

Last season’s promotion-winners Paddy McLaughlin, Maxim Kouogun, Olly Dyson, Ryan Whitley, Mitch Hancox, Maziar Kouhyar, Sam Sanders and Lenell John-Lewis have all been retained.

The club remain in contract talks over a new deal for left-back Scott Barrow while right-back Michael Duckworth has been invited back for pre-season training.

Meanwhile, York confirmed their six-friendly pre-season schedule by announcing a trip to Selby Town on Tuesday, July 26 (7.30pm).
