ADAM CROOKES has revealed that York City were "the first club" he "looked at" following his release from Grimsby Town.

Crookes joined York on Thursday, alongside fellow Grimsby man Scott Burgess, as City's new-look squad for their return to the Vanarama National League continues to take shape.

Both players have previously worked with Minstermen manager John Askey, with Crookes doing so as Port Vale.

“I’ve worked under the manager before and we seem to work well together so I’m looking forward to getting going and working with him again," said the 24-year-old.

“I knew of his interest for a while and he was keeping tabs on me last year. When I became available, this was the first club that I looked at.

“I’m just pleased to be here and I can’t wait to get going.”

Left-back Crookes arrives at York following the news that Scott Barrow, of the same position, is set to miss the entire 2022/23 season with an ACL injury.

“I’d predominantly a left-back or a left-sided defender," explained the Nottingham Forest academy graduate of his position.

"I’d say that I’m a hard-working type and I enjoy defending.

“I also like to get on the ball and pick a pass. I’d like to say that my game’s pretty consistent too.”

Burgess heads to York on the back of two previous spells with Askey, also at Port Vale and with Macclesfield Town too, as the Silkmen won the 2017/18 National League title.

He said: “I’ve worked with the gaffer a few times and I feel like I’ve played my best football under him, so hopefully I can kick on again and do well.”

On his position and style, he added: “I play in central midfield and I like to get on the ball and let the team play. I try and chip in goals when I can and create opportunities for the team.”
