RYAN WHITLEY has emphasised that earning the number one shirt at York City is “down to him” after signing a two-year extension with the club.

Whitley will be staying at the LNER Community Stadium until 2024, having signed his first professional deal with the club in 2017.

The former Scarborough Athletic loanee is the only confirmed goalkeeper next season so far, after Peter Jameson departed last month for Harrogate Town.

“If I can get that number one shirt and prove myself then who knows what can happen,” said Whitley.

“It’s down to me. I need to work hard and do the right things and give it my best shot.”

City also confirmed that midfielder Mitch Hancox had committed for next term after his release from Hereford.

Hancox scored nine goals in 34 league matches on loan at the Minstermen last season.

“I feel valued here so the chance to get it done and over the line, I couldn’t say no really,” noted Hancox.

York now have eight confirmed squad members for the 2022/23 season in the Vanarama National League, in Whitley, Hancox, Scott Boden, Paddy McLaughlin, Maxim Kouogun, Olly Dyson, Alex Hurst and Maziar Kouhyar.
