YORK City are in for their “toughest game yet” in tomorrow's play-off final against Boston United (3pm), according to Olly Dyson.

York will be seeking to end their five-year stay in the Vanarama National League North when they host Boston at the LNER Community Stadium this weekend.

City are facing the lowest-ranked of the six sides to qualify for the play-offs, with Boston finishing in the final top seven spot.

Despite that, United have twice upset the odds in wins over Kidderminster Harriers and AFC Fylde to reach the division’s showpiece event.

As well as those shock play-off victories, the Lincolnshire club may also take plenty of confidence from the regular season league double they managed over York – being one of only four sides to claim such a feat.

With all that said, Dyson is expecting the Minstermen to face their hardest challenge of the season in the final hurdle to promotion.

“We’ve got to take into consideration that they’ve beaten us home and away,” insisted the former Huddersfield Town man.

“This is going to be our toughest game yet so we need to be ready for it.

“They’re a good footballing side and they’ve got a good manager (Paul Cox).

“But we just need to play to our strengths and focus on ourselves and we’ll be fine.

“We just need to concentrate on ourselves because we’ve got more than enough to go and win, like we’ve done against Brackley and Chorley.

“We want to be positive about ourselves and focus on our game plan.”

Dyson has been a regular for York this season, most prominently on the right wing.

However, a season-ending injury to starting right-back Michael Duckworth has seen the number seven drop into City’s back four.

“I’ve loved it,” said Dyson of the switch. “I’ve played quite a few positions from being a kid to now. It’s one of those things that I've just dealt with and I’ve actually really enjoyed it.

“I feel like with more games under my belt, I’ve been able to learn the things that you have to get experience of there.

“Obviously Ducky was playing there and I’ve been asking him for a few tips and he’s really helped me out.

"With him being injured, I can speak to him. I’m enjoying every game and we’re doing really well.

"As long as I’m playing and I’m on the pitch, I’m not too bothered where I play.”

It was also revealed last week that Dyson has been handed the nickname Gary Neville by his team-mates.

“As a Leeds fan, to be called Gary Neville is a bit mad, but I’ll take it,” laughed Dyson. “He wasn’t a bad player was he?

“Now I’ve had a few games at right-back someone threw it in there and it’s stuck. I don’t mind it.”

Should the Minstermen defeat Boston this weekend, it would be Dyson’s second promotion at the age of just 22.

Dyson has previously gone up during a loan spell with Barrow, in 2020, to League Two, although he says Saturday’s potential experience will be far satisfying.

“When I was at Barrow and we got promoted, it was a bit rubbish because of Covid,” Dyson recalled.

“This has been my next full season. It would be two full seasons in men’s football and two promotions which isn’t too bad."

The Wakefield-born midfielder added: “York is one of my most local clubs so it’d be great if we could go up and play the likes of Notts (County), Wrexham and all those big teams.

“It’d mean everything. We’ve got one more game to go and we’re going to give it all.”
