JORDAN THOMPSON remains in the early stages of what promises to be an exciting career, but the all-rounder admits to relishing his growing seniority within the Yorkshire squad.

Thompson has returned to Headingley following a busy winter of franchise cricket with Hobart Hurricanes and Karachi Kings and has loved getting stuck into red ball preparations ahead of a busy start to the summer with a raft of LV= Insurance County Championship matches in April and May.

He toured Dubai earlier this month and is set to be involved in the three-day game against Durham at the Riverside, starting this morning (11am).

“Although I did well last year with the white ball stuff, leading to the Hundred, the Big Bash and the PSL, I was sick of the sight of the white ball by the time I got home,” he said.

“So I’ve really enjoyed getting stuck into some longer format work over the last few weeks.”

Thompson has enjoyed a stellar last two years with Yorkshire, performing in both limited overs and first-class cricket, highlighted by him finishing as the county’s leading wicket-taker in the 2020 Bob Willis Trophy with 15 and again in last season’s Championship with 46.

“I’ve not had much time this winter to work on my red ball game, so there are a few things I need to tighten up,” he continued.

“There are definitely things I can add to my game, but I’m very pleased with how things are going.

“I’ve hit good runs of form at the right time, which has enabled both myself to progress and the team to get some results. Now I need to back that up this season.

“Coming back, having played in two winter franchise tournaments, I feel like quite a senior player now within this group.

“People will be looking at the likes of myself and Brooky (Harry Brook), who has also played franchise cricket all winter along with his international stuff, to pass on some knowledge to the younger lads and help people out.

“It’s a role I enjoy.

“You look around our group and there’s a lot of young faces. So if I, along with the other senior lads such as Brooky, Patto (Steven Patterson), Lythy (Adam Lyth) to name a few, can help them out, then great.

“It’s something Ottis (Gibson) is big on - to be together, to train, as a full team as much as we can.

“He wants everyone to feel part of the squad, not just part of the first team or just part of the second team."
