CITY of York Girls Under-12s 'A' were narrowly beaten in the final of the England Hockey Cup Regional Finals, writes Clive Marshall.

The York youngsters progressed through four matches to set up a final against Ben Rhydding, where the two sides cancelled each other out in a stalemate.

In the penalty flick shootout, the Bradford club eventually prevailed to bring York's mazy tournament run to an end.

Izzy Hogg (5), Thea Camacho (3) Daisy Hughes (2) Nina Hopkins (1) Holly King (1) struck for York who scored 12 times, conceding just once en route to the final.

At the same event, the club's 'B' side were beaten in the semi-finals after progressing through two matches, letting in just two goals in the process.

City of York U16s had similar success as they dispatched Leeds 3-1 thanks to strikes from Olivia Roberts, Niamh Clements and Hatty Henebury.

Elsewhere, City of York Ladies I face a final-day battle for fifth place in the Yorkshire and North East League premier division on Saturday (12.15pm).

City of York are currently fifth and host sixth-placed Morpeth I, who trail by two points with a match in hand, this weekend in the former’s season finale.

Morpeth are currently on a four-match unbeaten while York returned to winning ways with a 3-1 win at Halifax I.

York made a good start but despite the positive early signs, the visitors could not convert from a number of circle entries.

Some intricate build-up play from York culminated in Clements flicking home the opener. A second followed soon after a fantastic goal from Lucy Barker, putting York 2-0 up at half time.

The second half saw York struggle for the same intensity as in the first, allowing Halifax to break through their front line with increasing regularity.

Some excellent defending from Heather Macdonald, in conjunction with superb saves from Cara Mackay, saw Halifax limited to just one goal.

This snapped York out of their lull and better connective play up the pitch led to Clements slotting in her second to securing the away side the points.

City of York II also faced Halifax, drawing 2-2 with the West Yorkshire club’s II side. Vicky Skilton and Corinne Wray were on the scoresheet for York.

York’s II outfit also won 5-2 away to Huddersfield Dragons I again thanks to goals from Skilton and Wray as well as strikes from Sarah Rogers (2) and Libby Rhodes.

There was another 2-2 draw when City of York IV entertained Leeds IV. Nicola Winter and Steph Young found the back of the net for the home side.

City of York V and VI picked up victories as they defeated Northallerton II (4-2) and Thirsk III (1-0) respectively.

Rebecca Copperthwaite bagged a brace for the former to complement strikes from Holly Clayden and Sarah Davies. Lucy Jones scored the only goal of the game for VI.

Leeds Adel III overcame City of York III 2-0.

Meanwhile City of York Men had a difficult latest round as their 10 sides picked up just three victories.

City of York IV won a seven-goal thriller with Scarborough I 4-3 while York X beat Ben Rhydding Development 8-2. The only other York win came courtesy of Scarborough III conceding 5-0 to the IX side.

Newcastle University I and Slazengers I edged past City of York I and II 2-1 and 3-2 respectively.

City of York III, V and VI all lost heavily against Lindum II (6-0), Leeds Adel III and Aire Valley (8-1).

The club's VII side lost 4-2 to Leeds VII while the IV outfit drew 2-2 with Ben Rhydding II.
