ENGLAND captain Joe Root has expressed his pride at handing a Test debut to York star Matthew Fisher.

Fisher has made his senior England bow in the second Test at Barbados against the West Indies, taking his first wicket in his second ball.

At the ceremonial cap presentation to Yorkshire's Fisher, Root said: "Since being a young kid at Yorkshire, every time you've come into any team I've been involved or aware of, and every time you've worn an England shirt, you've been very impressive.

"In the Under-19s, the Lions and since you've been around this group as well.

"Not just with your skill level, but with your personality as well.

"Everything that you've achieved until now, you've had some ups and downs throughout your career but it's made you the player that you are.

"I really hope more than anything you go out, express yourself and enjoy yourself.

"I know how proud you are, I know how proud your family are.

"Many congratulations and wear this with pride."
