BOOTHAM Ladies' Futsal Club suffered a 21-2 defeat at the hands of Sunderland University in their second match in the FA Futsal Women’s Super Series North 2.

Suzy Collins netted the club's first-ever league goal, and Denva Coupland added the second at the game in Warrington.

Evie Elsworth made her debut between the sticks, with keeper Lauryn Zabeda-Gilbank had been sidelined for the season with a serious ankle injury.

Bootham started well and the game was even for the first quarter but Sunderland broke the York outfit's resolve after 10 minutes and went on to dominate the game from there.

Collins netted Bootham's first following a great assist from Coupland, who then netted a second-half individual goal.

Coach Chris Collins said: "We are realising very quickly that any mistakes are punished in futsal. We got caught far too often on the transition with Sunderland moving the ball very quickly.

"That said, we did have some good possession and should have scored more goals. We need to concentrate on keeping possession and not trying to force our forward play.

"In the games we have played so far, the opposition have been very patient with the ball and picked the right moment to try and score."

Goalscorer Suzy Collins commented: "We always knew this league was going to be hard. The teams we are playing have years of experience playing futsal and we have only a few weeks.

"That said, we are not going to give up and each game we learn something new.

"We really did hold our own at the start, and for the first 10 or so minutes the game was very even. We need to stop conceding goals in groups, after we concede we need to be very compact and make sure we keep the opposition out for as long as possible.

"It’s amazing to score the first-ever Bootham goal in the league," she added. "I always wanted to score but really didn’t think I would be the first. Huge thank-you to Denva for the assist.

"I know we celebrated like we had won the game, but it is a huge stepping stone for us to score.

"I’m really pleased for Denva also for getting her goal in the second half, she worked so hard today and deserved it."
