IT has been a good week for York City. Six goals scored, progression in the FA Trophy secured, and momentum in National League North maintained.

On Saturday, the Minstermen battled back from 2-0 down to defeat visiting Morpeth Town in the Trophy last 16 before seeing off struggling AFC Telford 3-1 in the league.

This weekend, City travel to Kettering Town looking to make it four league wins on the bounce, and five in all competitions.

Here are five things we have learnt from the past week.

1. This side has character

Coming back from two goals down, whatever the level, is no mean feat, and to do so with 20 minutes remaining is remarkable.

As Morpeth fans celebrated Ryan Donaldson’s 65th-minute second for the Highwaymen, it would have been all too easy for City heads to drop at what - based on possession and shots on goal - felt like a robbery.

But they didn’t. Helped by Kurt Willoughby’s introduction four minutes later, York shifted up their intensity by a few gears, and deservedly got themselves back into the game seconds later. We all know what happened from there.

Again, on Tuesday, City eased off in the second half and allowed Telford a sniff. When the visitors pulled one back, it was almost as if York realised they had a point to prove, and Maxim Kouogun rose to head in a third just minutes later,

It gives hope for a denouement to a season which will require City to show some mettle to climb the table.

2. There is atmosphere at the new ground

It’s not Bootham Crescent. It’s not packed with layers on layers of history.

But it’s not sterile.

When Matty Brown’s header thundered into the back of the net, to coin a well-worn cliché, the roof almost came off the LNER Community Stadium. It was absolutely rocking.

Granted, a dramatic cup win such as Saturday’s does not come around very often, but it has shown the levels of noise two sides of a buzzing stadium can achieve.

As boss John Askey has said, it’s up to the players to give the fans something to feed off. And that could be forthcoming now we have seen...

3. Entertainment is on offer

Watching York does not have to mean sitting through an austere, clean sheet-first performance.

With 10 goals in three games and plenty of chances created, City are in their most exciting attacking form arguably since the early days of the 2019/20 season.

Against Telford, particularly in the first half, a forward-thinking York varied the focal points of their attack such that the question was just how the next goal would arrive, rather than if.

4. Loanees give something to be excited about

Askey’s “ability and naivety” assessment of the performances of Will Jarvis and AJ Greaves just about sums it up.

The pair are definitely talented, and have attributes that will gel well with this team. Greaves looked assured on the ball and in spraying out passes, while Jarvis enjoyed a few runs at the defence from out wide.

City also have the services of Lenell John-Lewis until the end of the season. The experienced marksman has shown with Hereford that he can perform at this level.

5. Kettering will be a real test

It is all very well averaging more than three goals a game against sides below you. The challenge now is doing it against play-off rivals.

But there is plenty of cause for positivity when City travel to seventh-placed Kettering.
