IT has been some season for Macaulay Langstaff with Gateshead.

The former York City striker first joined the Heed in February 2017, accompanied by a a formidable scoring record for Northern League side Billingham Synthonia.

He was unable, however, to replicate that form in the National League during his scant appearances for Gateshead, nor did he make much of a mark at Blyth Spartans in the tier below.

In his first season with City, 2018/19, Langstaff bagged himself 10 goals but struggled to make much of a mark on the subsequent Covid-disrupted campaign and returned to the International Stadium in 2020.

Now, the 24-year-old tops the scoring charts for National League North leaders Gateshead, with his 14 league goals making up just shy of seven per cent of his team’s 49 league goals this season.

Most recently, Langstaff scored a brace - one goal a penalty - to secure all three points for Gateshead in a 3-1 win at home to Leamington after the visiting Brakes had cancelled out the well-travelled Adam Cambell’s opener.

That was the fifth time the striker has scored twice in a league game this season. Eight of the nine league games in which he has scored have ended with Gateshead taking all three points.

Langstaff cannot rest on his top-scoring laurels, though, with Cedwyn Scott and Paul Blackett close behind him in the goals stakes. Both 23 years old, Scott has 13 goals and Blackett has 10 thus far.

Former York defender Robbie Tinkler has also chipped in with a couple this season, while player-manager Mike Williamson has netted once.

Gateshead have extended the loan of Hull City left-back Matty Jacob, who spent time on loan at Pickering Town in the 2019/20 season.
