YORK City made it through to the fourth round of the FA Trophy at the weekend thanks to an injury-time winner at Matlock Town.

On-loan striker Mark Beck provided the vital intervention, looping a header over Matlock's novice keeper Sam Ogden in the 91st minute.

Understandable joy erupted from the away end, but chants of "we're by far the greatest team the world has ever seen" were hyperbolic, even by the song's already over-excitable standards.

For much of the preceding 90 minutes, City underwhelmed and were far from dominant against their lower-league hosts, despite Matlock fielding a side hit by injuries and suspensions.

Still, there were bright spots, and the most important thing was the victory itself.

Here are five things we have learnt from the past week.

1. Win vital for confidence

City are a team looking for stability and consistency this season. Matters on and off the field have plagued the club since a pre-season row with Bradford City over their handling of Clayton Donaldson's signing, hitting the heady heights of betting charges and calls for the board to be sacked via the channels of the departure of manager Steve Watson and an ongoing injury crisis.

Results have not been going York's way, either, and they sit a good way outside the play-off places.

However, under interim boss John Askey, City softened their sternest critics with a determined display against Chorley. Had they lost at Matlock, one can only imagine the impact among the team and supporters.

The win, regardless of the manner, keeps that momentum going.

2. Next game is tougher, but still winnable

Victory puts City through to a home meeting with fellow Step 2 outfit Slough Town.

The visitors are on a decent run in National League South, having lost just once in their last eight games.

Overall, their form is remarkably similar to York's, with six wins and six defeats from 16 games.

3. Make the most of Beck

Unless his loan is extended, the striker will be at the LNER Community Stadium for just three more games.

True, he has hit the back of the net just a handful of times in his 17 appearances, but his worth extends to keeping defenders thinking, and he has the ability to act as a pivot either with his head or feet.

His lofted header was a good finish from Scott Barrow's free kick into a crowded area and shows what he can offer if the ball is played to him in the right way.

4. Wright or Fielding back into defence?

City have suffered another defensive blow with the news of Josh King's broken fibula. With centre-back Matty Brown suspended, Askey will likely have to drag someone back from midfield into the defence - probably either Fielding or Wright.

Both have performed well in defence this season, but the deciding factor could be Wright's nondescript display in midfield at Matlock.

5. Longdon could be a strong signing

He did not get loads of the ball but attacking midfielder Remy Longdon looked a real handful when he did.

Seemingly inexorably drawn towards the penalty area, the Lincoln City loanee offered a taste of that thrilling unpredictably raw talents possess.
