YORK City forward Kurt Willoughby admits that he has watched his wonder goal at Guiseley "about 50 times".

Willoughby struck home a stunning curling long-range shot in the 88th minute to give York a 1-0 win away to Guiseley.

The strike ensured that City picked up a first Vanarama National League North three points under new interim manager John Askey and sees them just a point behind the play-offs ahead of tomorrow night's visit to sixth-placed Gateshead (7.45pm).

“It was a good goal and I enjoyed it," an understated Willoughby reflected.

"I’ve watched it back about 50 times now,” he laughed.

“Scotty (Barrow) got the ball and there was a bit of space. I’ve ran into it and he’s threw me the ball well and it’s just opened up for me.

“I thought ‘I’ll take a chance, have a go and aim for the far corner’. Luckily it went in.

“It’s probably up there with my favourite goals. It was an 88th minute winner too so it meant a lot to get the three points and the win.”

Having edged an "even" game at Guiseley, Willoughby believes that the Minstermen need to show further "battling" qualities when they take a significant step up in opposition against Gateshead.

“That battle is going to be what wins or loses us the game," said the forward. "But we’re more than up for that, we know that that is in us.

“We’re going to go there ready and prepared. We’re up for it.”

Gateshead will be the strong favourites having won all five of their home league matches to date this season.

Should the Heed win their four matches in hand, they would go top of the division.

“They’ve been in some good form throughout this season and they’ve got some good players that we’re aware of," added Willoughby.

“We’ve watched them so we know what we’re up against. It’s going to be a tough game but we’re ready for it.”

York will be hoping to build on the back-to-back wins they have managed of late under new boss Askey.

Willoughby said: “It’s tough for the manager and players when a new manager comes in. But we’re adapting well and you can see game by game what he’s trying to implement.

“We’re taking it on board but it’s not going to happen overnight. But I think slowly it’s getting there and we’re improving.”
