JOHN ASKEY has ranked Gateshead as one of the top two teams in the Vanarama National League North but stressed that they are not "world beaters".

York City have sealed back-to-back wins under new interim manager Askey following the abject 2-1 defeat to Kettering Town they suffered in his first match in charge.

Having seen off Blyth Spartans and Guiseley, both of whom are currently in the bottom three, on paper York faced a far tougher challenge at the Gateshead International Stadium tomorrow evening (7.45pm).

Gateshead are the only team in the division to boast a 100 per cent record at home in the league - winning five from five. They currently sit sixth in the table, having lost just twice in 12 matches and have four games in hand on leaders AFC Fylde.

“From what we’ve seen, they’ve got some good players, who play some good football," said Askey.

"You’ve only got to look at the Charlton game (a 2-0 FA Cup defeat) to see that they’re a decent team and probably as good a team as there is in this league - them and Fylde.

“It’ll be a good test for us and I think we’ll see where we are now as a team coming up against Gateshead away from home, where they’ve not lost."

The interim boss added that a victory would raise morale "massively" and "it would give everybody a lift, not just the players. It would give the whole club a lift and some belief.

“It is going to be tough. But there’s no reason why we can’t (win), if we get the rub of the green.

“We’ll go there with confidence. We’re not coming up against world beaters, we’re playing against Gateshead. There’s no reason why we can’t get a result.”
