JOHN ASKEY insists that York City are still a “work in progress” after securing successive victories under his interim management.

A stunning late long-range strike from Kurt Willoughby sealed a 1-0 win Guiseley, following on from last weekend’s victory by the same scoreline against Blyth Spartans in the FA Trophy.

York have not appeared entirely convincing in either match but nevertheless have managed to somewhat rebuild following the sacking of manager Steve Watson last month.

Askey expressed his satisfaction at a first league win since he became interim manager but stressed his side had a long way to go if they are to achieve promotion come the end of the season.

“It’s huge for us because we’ve got some huge games coming up now,” he said. “It gets up to ninth, so we’re in touching distance of the play-offs again.

“It sets us up nicely for Tuesday (at Gateshead).

“It’s pleasing to get the win but it’s still a work in progress.

“It wasn’t pretty at times. But having said that, we had the ball in the net and the linesman gives it as offside, but I don’t think it was offside.

“Mark Beck missed a sitter and then Kurt comes up with a fantastic goal at the end.

“I thought we looked stronger today, our fitness is starting to show and we saw the game out well.

“As you all know, it has got to be better. But that’s what we’re trying to do, we’re trying to improve.”

The game appeared destined to finish scoreless until Willoughby’s sublime curling 30-yard effort.

“He was fantastic and he always threatens to do that,” Askey said his of his number nine. “He couldn’t have hit it any better.

“He was going away from goal so to strike it like he did, he couldn’t have put it in a better place. I don’t think anybody could have saved that."
