INTERIM manager John Askey believes that his York City side "need to get the crowd going" as they seek to put their Vanarama National League North promotion bid back on track.

York were the bookmakers' promotion favourites during the summer but have failed to deliver on their pre-season promise so far this season which ultimately cost former manager Steve Watson his position.

City, currently 13th in the table and 14 points adrift of division leaders AFC Fylde, now have Askey at the helm and he hopes to get the club's supporters back on side.

That task continues with a trip Guiseley as the Minstermen look for a first league win under Askey.

"We need to get the crowd going," the York boss said. "The crowd's there and if we can get them going, they'll really get behind the players.

"You have to give supporters something to shout about. They're not going to shout for you if you're not winning games or not playing particularly well.

"Players have got to realise that. From what I remember in the past, they've always been good supporters, York. We all know we shouldn't be where we are but we are.

"But it's a great chance to go and win something and to get the club back into a league they can progress from."

Asked what problems he expects from fourth-from-bottom, Askey laughed: "Hopefully none. It depends how we play and that's the most important thing.

"We're aware from how Guiseley play. Probably the position they're in is a bit of a surprise with the players they've got.

"The position we're in with the players we've got, we've got to show a little more and see if we can get another win on Saturday.

"With Gateshead coming up, we've got two tough fixtures so we'll see how we are in another three games.

"The signs have been good. I thought, on Saturday, although I wouldn't say we played well for 90 minutes, overall we controlled it. We passed the ball better than we did the previous week."
