YORK City have announced that former club director Robert McGill has died.

McGill, the father of chairman Jason McGill, was a fan of City since the 1950s and previously served as the club's business development director.

In a short club statement, York City said on their website: "York City Football Club is saddened to learn of the passing of former director Robert McGill.

"The thoughts and prayers from everyone at the football club are with Robert’s family at this difficult time."

Former York City winger Jamie Reed led the tributes to McGill on social media, writing: "One of the first people I met after signing, such a lovely guy. Really sad news."

The Press' former York City reporter Dave Flett said: "Very sad to learn of the passing of Rob McGill. A City fan since 1955 who cared about the club deeply and served it so diligently as a director.

"Also an absolute gentleman, who was a pleasure to deal with during my time at The Press."

Sharon Shortle, of BBC Radio York, said: "Really sad to hear this. He was always just lovely every time you met him. Gentleman is the world I'd also use about him."
